So, It was my first time being a bridesmaid! You know how I told you guys about how it had been close to 9 years since I attended a wedding ceremony and recently, I was a wedding guest. It’s beginning to feel like I’ve re-opened the wedding gate.
Last Saturday, my best friend got married in Aba, Abia state and I wasn’t just a wedding guest but one of her bridesmaids. It wasn’t just my first time being a bridesmaid but also my first time traveling out of my state for a wedding since my adulthood. I used this period as reference because that’s how far I can remember really.
The journey wasn’t an easy one because I traveled by road to Aba for this wedding. The other alternative was using either the airport in Rivers or Imo state and finding a means of transportation to Aba. That was only going to cut the travel time short but I will still have to get another means to reach Aba and this wasn’t cost effective either.
It was a 12-hour journey thanks to bad roads but I was in time for the surprise bridal shower her sisters put together While this was my first time being a bridesmaid, it wasn’t my first bridal shower, lol. Honestly, this friend is one of the few people I can do this type of long journey for. I prepared myself and my mind for the journey ahead of time.
Few days to the wedding, my friend sent me the address of a hotel to go to in Aba but her younger sister called me afterwards to give me the location of a different hotel (where they planned on surprising her when her guests/friends arrived)
On the day I arrived, My friend kept calling me asking where I was and I kept telling her I was still on the way, lol. She was so surprised when she came in and saw all of us (everyone she told to go to the other hotel) there.
Prior to her arrival, she was told a friend//guest was at the hotel (2nd location), so she decided to stop by to say hello before heading to the hotel she thought we (her guests) were at.
We did some bridal shower games, said a word or 2 about the bride, ate and drank. After a while, I retired to my hotel room because I was very tired and there was still a big day ahead of us. I think for my first time being a bridesmaid, I was looking forward to knowing how different it was from being one of the bride’s friends that can hang with the bridesmaids. That was me at the other wedding.
*PS: My 2 friends are cousins, so we are like sisters, lol. You can’t be sitting too far from your sisters.
The next morning, we had a photo shoot in our bridesmaids robes with the bride before dressing up in our bridesmaids dresses.
After the photo shoot, i dressed up in my bridesmaid dress. While waiting for the bride and other people to get ready, I took photos with my camera for this post. My first time being a bridesmaid had to be documented. Thank God I shared the hotel room with one of my secondary school mates who also likes taking photos.
We kept taking photos every chance we got till I had enough photos then it started raining.
Thank God the rain stopped at some point and we continued to the church service. After the church service, we took a couple of photos and headed to the venue of the reception. Let’s just say things are done a bit differently in Aba.
Thanks to this artificial tree I used as backdrop, the gloomy weather stood no chance at dulling our shine. Plus the colors matched our flowers and also created a great contrast with the dresses.
It was a beautiful event in all. I met other secondary school mates and it felt good seeing how much we have grown. You would have seen some of my Instagram stories prior to this post if you’re following me on Instagram.
About 6 hours after the reception, it was time for the wedding after-party where we danced and had so much. You won’t believe we left the club 3 hours to my departure time.
3 hours later and i was rushing to catch my bus (I already had my ticket), I didn’t think they would keep to the 6.30am time. I got there at 6.33am and had to pay 1k rescheduling/lateness fee.
In no time, I was on my way back to Abuja because of work the next day with nothing but great memories and sleepy eyes. The next 6 hours was more of me struggling with sleep and staying alert. 12 hours later, I was back to Abuja like I never left. So, that’s how my first time being a bridesmaid went. What is your most memorable experience as a bridesmaid or wedding guest?
Love of my life, where are you? If you’re reading this post, its high time you found me! This wedding was a reminder that I might actually be ready for this marriage journey but just haven’t been giving it much thought.
