5 Oils For Skin You Should Be Using

If you are a skincare enthusiast or someone with different skincare concerns, then oils for skin will definitely be at the top your search results anytime you search for skincare routines and products to tackle your skin concerns. Oils are a great addition to every skincare routine regardless of your type of skin.5 Great oils for skin care.

I used to shy away from using oils on my face especially because i have a sensitive and sometimes oily skin. As i got older and learnt more about skincare, i realized that an excessively oily skin (overproduction of oil on the skin) means the skin is compensating for lost oils, which means the skin requires more oil or moisture to balance out, therefore you will need to change your moisturizer or oil to a better one that can match the lost oils from bathing, etc.

I’m not saying all oils are good for your face or body. Heck no! Some oils were so moisturizing on my face but ended up breaking me out badly. So, know your skin type, skin concerns and research the oils that will suit those needs. I’ve put together brief descriptions and uses of 5 of the oils for skin that i currently use.

5 Oils For Skin You Should Add To Your Skincare Routine

  1. Avocado Oil: The oil gotten from avocado fruit is found to have very high nutritional value. They are considered to be as healthy as olive or almond oil, but more expensive when compared to other oils. Avocados are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E. They can provide skin with deep moisture. Avocado oil penetrates the skin but is also thick enough to serve as a protective barrier.Benefits of Avocado oil on skin: Smoothening and Soothing skin, Aiding of wound healing, Boosting of collagen production because of it’s sterolins, natural steroids that softens the skin and reduces the appearance of age spots, Moisturizing (both skin and hair), Reducing itching. I can attest to these benefits however, i found Sweet almond to be slightly more moisturizing. 2. Sweet Almond Oil: I discovered uses of sweet almond oil on skin while searching for natural oils and serums to brighten up dull skin. Even though my face can get oily sometimes, the rest of my body are really dry that some days i use body cream with a combination of 2 – 3 oils just to get my skin moisturized for a couple of hours. If you live in a country with extreme weather conditions then you would understand how the skin looks during and right after winter.  Almond oil is acquired from the almond seed, packed with antioxidants, high in vitamins E, A, D and B, contains protein, essential minerals and healthy fats as well. Benefits of Almond oil on skin: Moisturizing, Anti-inflammatory, Removing dark circles, Reducing and delaying appearance of wrinkles and other signs of ageing, Reduces stretch marks, Brightens skin, Sun protection. Of all the listed benefits, the ones i can attest to are: moisturizing (for both my skin and hair), removing dark circles and reducing wrinkles, I use it together with my sunscreen so i can’t say for sure if it’s working or not.Reasons you might need sweet almond oil in your skincare regimen. 3. Olive Oil: This is probably one of the oldest and healthiest oils in use. If you are Nigerian, you would know about “anointed olive oils” often bought or given in churches for healing, anointing, etc. This oil sometimes referred to as “liquid gold” is rich in vitamin E and A. Olive oil helps skin cells to regenerate.Benefits of Olive Oil on Skin: Exfoliating, Antioxidant protection, Moisturizing, Soothing (Anti- inflammatory), Reducing wrinkles. This is the oil i don’t leave on my skin. I apply olive oil on my skin sometimes just before i shower to soothe and moisturize my skin. I use it as pre-poo product sometimes with other oils or egg. I also add some drops into my bath when i’m in need of a very soothing soak but i never apply and leave it on my skin as a moisturizer like the other oils for skin mostly because i’m not a big fan of the smell.
  4. Coconut Oil: Coconut is very popular, not just for the refreshing beach drinks or the picture-perfect beach photo props but also the benefits of coconut oil on skin. Coconut oil was my first intro into the world of oils in skincare. Read: My Review of Unrefined Coconut Oil.With the popularity and hype of coconut oil on the internet, you would think this is the holy grail oil. While it has its benefits: Smoothening and shine, Reducing and fading scars, Anti-aging, it’s not very moisturizing. It’s best used with other oils. Most people use it as make up remover but it breaks me out if i use it on my face so i stick with mixing it with other oils and creams for my hair and body for that extra shine. It’s a great addition to your moisturizer for extra shine but note that it could be comedogenic on some skins.
  5. Tea Tree Oil: This is my favorite oil for spot treatment, that’s why i added it to this list. I don’t use it as a moisturizer like the other oils but it’s benefits are just as important. I’m one of those lucky people who have absolutely no issues with tea tree both on skin and hair. I don’t react to it even when applied directly on my face undiluted. Tea tree can be used to treat even more complex skin conditions like warts, ringworm, psoriasis etc not just acne.Benefits of tea tree oil on skin: Clearing of acne, corns, toe nail fungus and sores, Fighting of foot odor, Relieving and soothing of itching skin and scalp, Reducing and eliminating boils and pimples.Tea Tree Oil - Beyond acne clearing and spot treatment Click To Tweet

While oils are so soothing and moisturizing, remember to stay away from oils if you are allergic to the seeds they are made from.
