Hello Lovelies! You won’t believe what happened yesterday, i.e. Sunday July 8, 2018. I woke up looking forward to attending the leading ladies in business summit later in the day after I had ironed my kimono trouser set ready for 3pm. This would be the 4th time I would be wearing this kimono trouser outfit hoping to take outfit photos for the blog.
I returned from church few minutes to 2pm and quickly sent a message to my friend Chisom who also planned on going for the summit. She confirmed her attendance and I quickly removed my church outfit and headed to the dining table for the obligatory Sunday rice. Note that: this wasn’t my first meal of the day. I had eba and okro soup in the morning (shhh don’t tell anyone!).
Thinking about it now, I actually realize that rice delayed me. I could have skipped the food and eaten later so that I can get to the venue at 3pm (starting time of the summit). This wasn’t because I was looking forward to networking but because it was a free event (who doesn’t love free things) at Transcorp Hilton with notable speakers.
In my defense, I usually go for events early but after getting to Abuja events at the stated times severally and having to wait for more than 5 hours in some of them, I learnt to readjust to “African time”. Sadly, this wasn’t the case at the leading ladies in business summit. Just like the Lafiya lifestyle expo, they started at the stated time.

I got there by past 4pm (1hour after the stated time) and everywhere was filled up including the space outside where the summit was holding. Now, let me tell you about how I’ve planned on taking photos of this kimono trouser outfit at events I’ve attended up to 3 times and failed till this summit.
This could have actually been as a result of waiting for Sunday rice! Click To TweetThe first time: I wore this kimono trouser outfit to a birthday party of a dignitary’s child. I didn’t know the family, I was invited by my uncle along with the rest of the family. Knowing the type of people that would attend, I went for fashionable but classy just in case (you never know who you’ll meet there). Other family members went including my grand aunt who had just flown in from London.
Free food and drinks plus somewhere to go on a Saturday evening, not a bad idea, lol. I tried taking some photos but the space left in the compound was too tight and nobody was willing to leave the compound with me just to take photos (blogger problems). I ended up with a few closeup shots and some full shots that I didn’t like. Blog post got canceled and the shoot rescheduled.
The second time: I wore the kimono trouser outfit for The Dome’s relaunch. Somehow, i kept lazying about at home and finally got there around 6pm when it was already too dark to take photos. Also, the person to help me take the photos got there around 7pm. Taking photos during the event didn’t happen either, most places were either filled with people or poorly lit.
Eventually, I gave up and took a couple of photos with people including the winner of big brother Nigeria 2018 (BBnaija 2018) using phone. The photos weren’t good enough for the blog so I posted them only on my Instagram. It was as though the kimono trouser outfit didn’t want to make it to the blog.
The third time: I wore it to church and was hoping to take outfit photos after church service. The sunlight was too much at the suitable locations both at church and at home so, I decided to wait till evening. After eating the obligatory Sunday rice (that will put me in trouble one day), I slept off and woke up around 7pm. It was obvious that this kimono trouser outfit didn’t want to be on the blog.
After I had forgotten about scheduling a shoot day for the kimono outfit, I came across a post on leading ladies in business. It was dubbed ‘real-talk summit ‘, a gathering of female entrepreneurs in the city of Abuja. The event was to take place at Transcorp Hilton with guest speakers such as Ogwa ogbe-iweze of Dyzn couture, Toyin Lawani of Tiannah’s Empire, Funke Bucknor of Zaphaire events and many others listed on the flyer.
It was scheduled to start at 3pm prompt at the congress hall of Transcorp and probably started at that time judging by the crowd outside who couldn’t get in because the actual area being used was filled. The area used was in the same building as the congress hall but not the congress hall.
This was a good event and location to shoot the long awaited kimono trouser outfit photos, or so I thought. The last of my first set of two piece outfits yet to be photographed. Around past 2, after I got back from church, the weather changed and it started drizzling. Honestly, the first thing that came to my mind was, not this outfit again!
This experience reminded me not to be dependent on things happening around me. Here's why. Click To TweetI jokingly started narrating how things always happen any day I want to finally take photos of the outfit because I thought it was going to rain. Luckily, while I was about giving up on going anywhere, the cloudy weather cleared up and it stopped drizzling. I called my friend and informed her I was headed there in an Uber so that we can meet because Transcorp is about 5 minutes drive from where I live. I didn’t want to get there before her.
After I got down from the Uber (*P.S. I use them a lot because of comfort plus I get discounts weekly, I’m not that rich yet, please!), I called my friend and waited for her in front of the congress hall so that we could go in together. She came in from the other side because of the parking lot she used and I had to climb up to meet her.
I saw a lot of people standing around and even more seated and facing an open door. My friend was near a registration booth waiting for me. In my mind, the event was yet to start, people were just waiting. Little did I know, those people were the extras that couldn’t fit inside.
Regardless, we had to write down our names, type of business and contact phone number. So, it was basically like in Uni where you ensure your name is on the attendance list of a lecture even if you don’t stay for the lecture because – crazy professor, anything can happen.
After my previous experiences with this kimono trouser outfit, I wasn’t about to give up on taking outfit photos. Like, why should one outfit stress me when it’s not made of diamond and money. Thankfully Chisom wasn’t in a hurry to leave, so I asked her to accompany me downstairs and help me take outfit photos before we leave. I had to achieve something there before leaving you know.
I remembered something our senior pastor said while preaching in church. He said, “You can’t be dependent on things happening around you only”. This made me even more determined to take the outfit photos not because the kimono trouser outfit is special or anything but because I couldn’t understand why I’ve been trying to take these outfit photos for more than 2 months.
You won't believe how long it took for this kimono trouser outfit to finally show up on the internet. Click To TweetNow you know what eventually happened after I wore my kimono trouser outfit to leading ladies in business summit but couldn’t get in. The elusive photoshoot finally happened! Wasn’t what you were expecting? Yeah, me too, lol.
