How to pronounce designer names or some words in fashion can be a pain sometimes. I remember the first day I learnt the correct pronunciation of Lingerie {lon-zher-ee(Uk), lon-zher-ay(Us)},after years of reading it without actually trying to pronounce it. I felt so dumb that day because I’ve always heard it pronounced on tv but never realised it was the word ‘lingerie’ that was being pronounced. Sometime last year while watching one of the old seasons of ANTM, Tyra gave the girls a task to pronounce certain fashion and designer names. Most of them got the pronunciations wrong, I realised I couldn’t pronounce most of them correctly either so I decided to do a little research to improve my fashion lexicon and the very first word I learnt to pronounce was Hermès.
After about 2 weeks, a friend of mine pronounced it as ‘hems’ like I used to before I learnt and I corrected her proudly like a fashion lexicon genius..lol Anyways, I came across this list of designer names and their pronunciations and I thought you might like to know the right way to pronounce designer names, at least some of them.
How To Pronounce Designer Names
- Anna Sui: Anna swee
- Balmain: Bahl-MAH-n
- Christian Lacroix: christian luh-kwa (Lacroix is french so the ‘r’ is pronounced as ‘w’ and ‘x’ is silent)
- Christian Louboutin: christian loo-boo-tahn
- Givenchy: jhee-von-shee
- Hermès: ehr(like air)-mez
- Hervé Léger: ehr VAY ley-JAY
- Jean Paul Gaultier: jhon paul go-tee-ay
- Lanvin: Lohn-vahn (the two ‘n’s are to be pronounced softly like in balmain.
- Louis Vuitton: loo-wee-vwee-tahn
- L’Wren Scott: la-ren scott
- Miu Miu: mew-mew
- Monique Lhuillier: mo-neek loo-lee-air
- Moschino: moss-key-no
- Proenza Schouler: pro-enza SKOO-ler
- Rochas: row-SHAH

- Roksanda Ilincic: roksanda ill-in-chik
